She Builds

Two days, two cities. We held our first She Builds on AWS Community Day events this week in Sydney and Melbourne. I’m excited about what is next, and working to create more opportunities for women to present their experiences as engineers, developers and learners. The eagerness and energy from the sessions has me determined to do more.

Communities can bring change – because of how we choose to support one another. The most powerful feedback for me- was folks asking- What’s the next event? Where can we continue this? and (best of all) Can I present? I want to create a platform for others- where voices who have not yet had the mic- do. Our voices matter. They need a platform.

The community we are building has many parts- from sharing technical knowledge and experience on solving real world problems, to working together with hands on builders sessions, to talking through challenges we face with cement or glass ceilings, or bias and false assumptions on our expertise.

Learning the stories and challenges of others- from the very brave questions asked during our fireside is at the core of what community means. If we can create opportunities for people to ask frank (and raw) questions about their challenges, and in that same moment be a network of support, advice and help- then we will make a difference.
